ROSE MARIE 'ROSIE' CHAON MACKAY ROCKFORD - Rose Marie "Rosie" Chaon MacKay, born Aug. 24, 1941, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009, surrounded by her family. Rosie fought a brave, brief battle with lung cancer. She was not afraid to die because she was never afraid to live. In addition to being the best possible wife, mother and grandmother imaginable, Rosie was a consummate teacher. She taught for 38 years, most of which was spent in Rockford District 205. After graduating from Mount Saint Clare Academy in Clinton, Iowa, Rosie received her B.A. from Marquette University and her M.A. in education from Northern Illinois University. She was a private pilot, along with her husband, and they had a million adventures. She was a traveler, laugher, listener, Delta Kappa Gamma member, Illini fan, potluck lover, professional grandmother and friend to all. Rosie leaves behind to laugh at her jokes her husband, Pete; daughters, Margot (Efrain) Castillo and Meredith; lights-of-her-life granddaughters, Ariana Elise and Ava Marie Castillo; sisters, Darlene (Bob) Gehant and Donna (George) Johnson; along with many wonderful nieces and nephews; and lifelong friend, Rita Dixon. She was preceded in death by her parents, Oliver and Alberta (Dinges) Chaon. The family wishes to express great appreciation for the amazing care provided by Northern Illinois Hospice and Grief Center. Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, in St. Edwards Church, 3004 11th St. Visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, in Sundberg Funeral Home Ltd., 215 N. Sixth St. Burial at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Cemetery in West Brooklyn. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Delta Kappa Gamma Scholarship Fund or the United Way of Rock River Valley.
